Caramel Apple Bars

I received this recipe from my neighbor after having tried it and, well, you know, started drooling!

Base and Topping
2 cups Gold Medal All-Purpose Flour
2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 cups margarine or butter, melted

Filing
1 1/2 cups caramel ice cream topping
1/2 cup Gold Medal All-Purpose Flour
2 cups coarsely chopped peeled apples
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (I used Pecans)

1. Heat oven to 350, grease 15X10X1 inch baking pan. In a large bowl combine all base and topping ingredients; mix at low speed until crumbly. Press 1/2 of mixture into bottom of pan to form base. Save rest for topping. Bake for 8 minutes.

2. Combine Caramel topping and 1/2 cup of flour in small saucepan and blend well. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil 3-5 minutes or until it thickens slightly, stirring constantly.

3. Remove pan from oven. Sprinkle apples and nuts over warm base. Pour caramel mixture evenly over the top. Sprinkle with reserved topping mixture.

4. Return to oven; bake an additional 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 30 minutes. Refrigerate 30 minutes or until set. Cut into bars. Serve to smiling bookclub friends.
